The Joy of Living

New Beginnings Weekly Devotions – January 1-7, 2012

By Dr. Bill Stepp

Scripture for the Week:  Nehemiah 8:10

“The Joy of the Lord is Your Strength”

Quote for the Week:

“To get up each morning with the resolve to be happy…is to set our own conditions to the events of each day.

To do this is to condition circumstances instead of being conditioned by them.”~~~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

God wants you to experience joy.  How are you doing in this important area of life?  Do you enjoy God, yourself, your family, your work?  Many people, rather than experiencing joy, are overwhelmed, stressed out, discouraged, irritated, or upset.  The good news is that the Spirit of God creates for us and in us the qualities of “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23).  Jesus said, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. (John 15:11).

What is joy?  Is it a feeling? An attitude? A lifestyle?  Tim Hansel in his book You Gotta Keep Dancin’ tells us that “Joy is that deep settled confidence that God is in control of every area of your life.”  If you are looking for joy and longing for happiness, try giving your life to God.  Focus on thanking God for the good things in your life.  Read God’s word and memorize God’s promises in the Bible.  You can begin by reading John 15:1-16 and memorize verses 9-11, verse 16, verse 5, and verse 7.

If you want us to help you experience joy, go to the “contact” tab and e-mail us.  New Beginnings can help you to experience more joy in your life.

The Apostle Paul’s prayer in Romans 15:13 is my prayer for you:  “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
